Fragrance oils are liquid scents that are concentrated, usually used to add aromas to a variety of different products such as candles, lotions, soap, perfumes and so much more.
Fragrance Oil Ingredients
Fragrance oils are derived from a combination of natural essential oils, synthetic aroma chemicals, solvents and diluents. Although fragrance oil does contain natural components such as essential oils, they are still considered synthetic. However, the beautiful things about working with these oils are they have been formulated and undergone extensive testing in order to be safe in finished product and have a consistent performance.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are extracted from the natural material of plants, leaving a pure liquid that contains the aroma compound. Leaves, flowers, roots, seeds or even stems undergo processes like steam distillation and cold pressing to extract oils.
Aroma Chemicals
Aroma chemicals are compounds formulated in a laboratory that are complex and enhance fragrances or aromas they are infused in. These aromas are highly volatile with the flexibility to easily disperse into any scent, enhancing diffusive properties that allow longer lasting fragrances. These types of compounds come in two different forms, liquid and powder.
Solvents and Diluents
Solvents are the dissolving agents, whereas diluents are components added to a substance to thin it out. When a synthetic aroma is in powder form, a solvent is necessary to convert it to a liquid for use in a fragrance oil. These solvents help components of oil to burn more evenly, bind better with wax, improve fragrance throw and increase the life of fragrance oil to last the entire life of candle. These substances adjust the density of fragrance oils to make it easier for the wax/fragrance combo to be easily pulled up through wick to be burned by the flame.

What are phthalates?
Phthalates are chemical compounds that help bind the fragrance oil to wax. There are a wide range of negative health side effects that are associated with use of phthalates including endocrine disruption, increased allergies, low birth weight and more.
